My Story

I'm Malaysian, raised in a Chinese family, went to school in Australia, I was on a student exchange scholarship in Oklahoma State University and I'm currently pursuing my MA Counseling Psychology in University of Central Oklahoma. I'm all about getting out of my comfort zone to explore the world and experience all kinds of different people and cultures. I am also very interested to work here in America due to the compatibality of its environment with my personality.

I'm always open and ready to learn new things everyday and all these experiences have shaped me into a person who is constantly challenging myself to do things that I didn't think is possible. With that in mind, I'm ready to face all the challenges that the workforce has to offer. I survived living alone in 5 cities across 4 countries in the past 5 years, what else can I not handle?

My heart belongs to everyone out there. I volunteer, and I work with people as young as 3 right up to 90 or maybe older. The legacy I want to leave in this world is to be that one person who has touched the lives of people who's crossed my path. And my mission in life is to make that come true.

Title: Gender Differences In Statistical Anxiety And Its Effect On Attitudes Toward Learning Statistics

Abstract

One of the graduate requirements in Psychology degree is a successful completion in at least an introductory research method course and it has often comes as a surprise for many students as they have doubts about their quantitative skills (Tremblay, Gardner & Heipel, 2000). As stated in Onwuegbuzie (2004), 80% of graduate students experienced statistics anxiety and were found to enervated performance in statistics and research methodology courses. With the growing concerns of researchers and educators in this topic, the aim of this research report is to investigate gender differences in statistical anxiety and attitudes toward studying statistics.

General anxiety is usually comprehended as a negative feeling when individual’s goals have been manipulated (Tremblay, Gardner & Heipel, 2000). Cruise et al. (1985) defined statistics anxiety as “feelings of anxiety encountered when taking a statistics course or doing statistical analyses; that is gathering, processing and interpreting data”. Whereas Pan & Tang (2005) explains that statistics anxiety is elucidated as an uneasy feeling within an individual upon the encounter of statistics in any form and aspect. Many students fear statistics so much that they would delay enrolling in statistics classes until the final year of university, which is clearly the most inappropriate time to undertake such demanding course. This often causes individuals to delay graduation from the degree program as expected (Onwuegbuzie, 2000).

Higher statistics anxiety among females has been demonstrated in several studies (Bandalos, Yates & Thorndike-Christ, 1995), where Hilton, Schau & Olsen (2004) found that females exhibit greater statistics anxiety by 90% as they proceed with the course. Kagan (1987) clarified the statement in which females were found to generalize their anxiety responses more than males and their low self-efficacy also influences their performance in solving mathematics problems (Bandalos, Yates & Thorndike-Christ, 1995).

On the other hand, many studies have also examined gender differences in attitudes toward statistics and males were found to have a more positive attitude toward learning statistics (Hilton, Schau & Olsen, 2004). It was consistent with Catsambis’s (1994) conclusion in which females have negative attitude toward mathematics of 25.9% more than males due to their limited academic confidence in this field. In addition, Catsambis (1994) found that females do not perform as well as males in mathematics because of their lacked of interest; hence, they turn down most learning opportunities in this stream.

In the present study, Psychology students enrolled in Quantitative Methods and Experimental Psychology classes in Oklahoma State University completed a questionnaire to explore the gender differences in statistics anxiety and how it influences one’s attitudes toward learning statistics. It was anticipated that there would be a negative relationship between scores on Statistical Anxiety Scale and the Attitudes toward Learning Statistics Scale. It was also hypothesized that female would score higher level on the statistics anxiety scale and lower (less positively) on the attitudes toward statistics scale than males.
